Excelsior Aviator Goggles by janus002 Excelsior Aviator Goggles by janus002
Here is a new view of my own personal goggles, the Excelsior Aviator Ocular Shields. I have been wearing these to quite a few events and I'm happy to say that they get a lot of attention and compliments from people. Mostly people tell me that they like how they look and they ask a whole lot of questions about how they were made. They are kind and I always tell them these are still a work in progress because I always see things I want to change about them.

It's basically been a year since I created these steampunked goggles and during that time I have certainly learned quite a bit about this process of creation. Things get tried and failed or lead me to amazing other steps and when I look back on the things I have made I am both pleased and a little sad if I let them go.

I'll be posting more images of the things I have made to this point, some of which are now in my etsy store to share with others. Please look at the store and if you are more curious about the process look at my blog.

Thanks,
Brad

These are wonderful! I love all the lenses and the green liquid and lightbulby things! You are so talented! I am planning to start learning to sew to make better Neo-Victorian outfits, I am jealous of your skills!

Thank you so much for your kind comment. These were a lot of fun to make and I just kind of went crazy adding things on when I was making them. I really can't sew anything myself but I do see a lot of older style patterns for sale on etsy which might be some help to you.

These remind me a bit of the hat Brendon wears in the Ballad of Mona Lisa video. Excellent job with these goggles ;D

I served on old time diesel-electric submarines, and studied electronics at a time when almost all our equipment used vacuum tubes. And the "bubble" was the most important device used to dive, surface and maintain attitude while submerged. WAY COOL! (This was during the 1960's)

Oh, thank you. You really should try it. It's so much fun and changes the way you look at everyday items that you might normally just through away or put in the recycling bin.

I hope it was only the hat because the goggles are my own custom design.

well, the hat was the same, and the goggles were a little similar, but there were some additions such as a headband with a larger magnifying glass attatched in addition to the smaller one. The headband also included what appeared to be some sort of lockpicking set and the girl's costume included a tool-glove with some modifications like those what appear to be lightbulbs on the top of the goggles. In essence, the same goggle setup with some minor tweaks and major additions to the whole costume. I wish i got a pic of that outfit tho, it was amazing

It sounds really cool. I am always amazed at how so many people can take almost the exact same stuff and come up with so many different pieces of artwork. Steampunk is so much fun.

Ikr, if my parents were not so "EVERYTHING MUST BE AS MODERN AS POSSIBLE!" I would get into it, could you name any good store chains that would sell good steampunk items?

Store chains, not really. I get some small parts from Lowes to make things with and Hobby Lobby too. Finished steampunk stuff is probably best from ebay or etsy. You can find a pretty wide range of styles and prices that way.
