Excelsior Goggles With New Lens by janus002 Excelsior Goggles With New Lens by janus002
Another new photo of my own personal steampunk goggles, the Excelsior Aviator Ocular Shields. This time I have upgraded the lens on the right side with a special, laser etched ruby red lens for a bit more added detail. Perhaps if the hat was a lighter color you would be able to see the red color a little better but I really love how the etching looks in this view.

The goggles were steampunked by myself using a lot of different various methods and you can look at earlier posts here [link] and here [link].

The new lens was not made by me but instead by a very nice lady who runs a store on etsy called The Golden Gear. Ilana Murray is based out of Santa Clara, CA in these United States and I would highly recommend you check out her items as she is reasonable on prices and communicates well with her customers. Her store link: [link]

Plus, as long as you are on etsy check my store out as well for more steampunk goodies and supplies: [link]

Thanks!  I used a type of paint called "Rub N Buff" which I picked up at a craft store.  If you paint the plastic black then apply the rub n buff with an old brush or cloth you can get this nice weathered look.  Plus it is fun to do anyway.

The green tube with liquid was from a leveling ruler, right? I took one apart myself to use that very same part.

Yeah, I started calling it a "spirit level". They are pretty cheap at hardware stores. I also coated it with a matte gloss to make it a little less new looking.

You're welcome! I just discovered steampunk a few months ago but I'm infatuated with it! I would love your feedback on the few crafted deviations I have. I'm trying to improve and learn. If not then thank you for the inspiration anyway!

The vacuum tubes don't really fit the steampunk milieu, technically, but it looks cool so what the hell.

I see people use these welding goggles all the time for steaminess, but it usually comes out very bland, poorly painted, and unsatisfying.

This is not of those goggles, these are inspiring. Great job.

To critique it, I would say the spiderwebish eye cover need a better paint job. The plastic seeming silver matte clashes with the rest of it. Repainting that would be a great improvement to a minor detail.

Thank you for the kind review and the critique. The paint I had originally used on that web thing was very silvery and bright but I later tried a matte spray to cut it down because it seemed too new looking. As these have progressed I have often thought about redoing that as well as adding other colors to some of the other details. Thanks for the input!

Those are actually old vacuum tubes that were probably used for something like a radio or television. I have seen them sold on ebay but they can be somewhat pricey. You have to be careful too because the glass can be brittle if they are the real old ones.

Loverely! Isn't it funny how we all use old radio tubes? I had no clue what they were till I was making a typewriter-thingy for a prop... and now I see them everywhere!

Thanks! Yes, I feel like radio tubes are sort of miniature works of art all by themselves. I would probably use them all of the time if I could.
